Trendforce Forecasts 75% Y/Y Growth for VR Market in2017
December 22, 2016

On December 16 Trendforce forecasted that the VR market size by unit would reach 5.1m units in 2017.  Currently, the company predicts that 2.9m units will be shipped in 2016.  Sony is a leading VR brand by producing a VR device, which is compatible to its PS game device.  In terms of market size by revenue, the Trendforce forecasts the market will reach US$1.9b in 2016 and increase to US$22.4b in 2020. Taiwan-based Trendforce, said that VR shipments (excluding mobile VR) will grow from 2.91m units this year to 5.1m units next year, with strong holiday sales this year setting the tone.  The firm notes that component shortages and low yields have constrained the market for such devices and expects tight supply to continue through next year.  Sony is expected to remain the leader with its PlayStation based device as December accounts for ~50% of PlayStation sales for the year, and Sony is expected to increase the number of PlayStation VR games in 2017, including those made by 3rd party developers, but Sony could run short of headsets this holiday season and will push suppliers to increase production to fill what is expected to be ~67% growth next year.  Industry revenue (excluding mobile VR) is forecast at  ~$1.9b this year, inclusive of hardware and software, reaching $22.4b in 2020, although software will have a far greater share of industry dollars as the market grows.
