Sharp Ending TV Panel Supply Agreement with Samsung
December 22, 2016

Late last week, the Japanese press reported that Sharp would cease supplying TV panels to Samsung next year.  Sharp is said to have supplied Samsung with ~4m TV panels per year, almost half of its output and ~7% of Samsung’s demand.  Hon Hai is expected use the panels as an OEM or under its own brand.  Hon Hai began supplying TVs to Radio Shack as a house brand producer in 2013, also producing a house brand for 7-Eleven and later in the year under its own brand in conjunction with a Taiwanese ISP, while supplying both Sony and Vizio but little has been said about its own brand for the last few years. Samsung Display has been reducing its exposure to the large panel TV market over the last year or so, as it closes or re-purposes some of its older, less efficient display fabs, and Samsung Electronics has used outside panel producers to fill the gaps. Samsung Electronics has purchased TV panels from BOE over the last few years, particularly 32” models, while using Sharp’s Gen 10 fab to supply large TV panels. Samsung’s TV division was notified of the change by Sharp last week, which set in motion a plan to offset the loss with a new supplier.  As the Chinese panel producers are not yet focused on larger size TV panels, Samsung has reportedly contacted long-time rival LG Display to supply the larger panels next year, according to industry sources.  LG management said that although they had once considered becoming a supplier to Samsung, there is no ongoing dialog.  Without LGD, Samsung likely candidates would be BOE, China Star, Innolux or AU Optronics, all of whom have far more limited offerings.
